He is a single man, with brown hair and brown eyes; he stands about five-eleven, and has a muscular, somewhat stocky build. He is single, and for many years has considered his job to be his wife.

The truth is, Sam has very little confidence when it comes to women, and he has never met one who has been strong enough to overcome his shyness with her own strength and determination. He has a pure heart, and is far too trusting for his own good.

Dr. Beck is a beautiful, raven-haired ornithologist with bright green eyes and an even brighter smile. She is funny and high-spirited. Kate has a love for heavy metal music. She, too, is single, devoting her free-time and affection to her own career, which involves her studies for the University of Washington in Seattle. She is a bit more street-wise and far less trusting than Sam; Kate understands that everyone operates out of their own motivation, and it usually is selfish and devious simply looking out for themselves and their own desires.

Kate finds comport in animals, particularly birds, and prefers to place her trust and fears in her furry and feathery companions. Animals are far more trustworthy than people, they don’t operate on ulterior motives, simply what they want and don’t want.

    Dr. Harold Kreiger

  • Blood Feather Awakens Writers Commentary

Blood Feather Awakens By RWK Clark
Blood Feather Awakens By RWK Clark

Of the books I have penned, ‘Blood Feather Awakens’ was one of the most fun for me. It tells the story of Sam Daniels, a wildlife photographer who, while on assignment in the Amazon jungle, encounters a breathtakingly beautiful, but horribly deadly, prehistoric bird. Sam manages to snap a couple of grainy photographs, which he takes to an ornithologist at the University of Washington for identification. That is just the beginning of the tale; Sam and Dr. Kate Beck, accompanied by three guides and tailed by a couple of fame-seeking paleontologists, venture back to the jungle to find, and hopefully capture, the murderous creature.

Why was this book so much fun to write? I would have to attribute it simply to the imagination involved in it. I found it was a subject I could really do anything with, if I so chose. I wanted to make the time in the jungle both horrifying, thanks to the evasive bird, and romantic, due to the blossoming romance between Kate and Sam. I also wanted it to be bloody, because let’s face it: If a massive prehistoric bird were to attack, well, it would be nothing but bloody.

Blood Feather: Where Ancient Terror Takes Flight!

I also thrived on creating realistic relationships between all of the people. For instance, even though Sam and Kate are in the company of jungle guides, all of them are in this terrible situation together. It was imperative that they talk and laugh, that they come to trust and depend on each other in a way that simply would not take place on a normal jungle tour. Everyone is frightened, but they are also eager.

    –↓–“A word from our sponsor”–↓– –↑–“Ads made this possible”–↑–

But then we have the two paleontologists, Dr. Harold Kreiger and Dr. Roy Hastings. These two men work at the University of Washington, just as Kate does. Since they are colleagues of hers, she takes Sam to see them when he brings her the photograph of the bird and recognizes it as ‘prehistoric’ in nature. But, just as she fears, these two begin to see how beating Kate and Sam to the punch will make them famous.

    –↓–“A word from our sponsor”–↓– –↑–“Ads made this possible”–↑–

Now, before going any further, I must inform readers that it was never meant to be a sugar-coated piece of fiction. I wanted the truth about how dangerous this thing was in my own mind to be clearly conveyed; this bird can think, reason, and use logic. The humans which pursue it may outsmart it and capture it, but all it needs is a little time to sort things out and find a way to appease its own bloodthirsty nature. This thing was never meant to be captured; after all, it survived a meteor hitting the Earth millions of years ago, and it has managed to continue its species for the sole reason that ‘life will find a way’. The determination shown to simply survive needed to clearly reflect its ability to destroy, as well. I believe that I portrayed all of this clearly and concisely, especially at the very end.

So, what is ‘Blood Feather’? To put it simply, the creature is, indeed, a bird, but it is prehistoric, related to the ‘archaeopteryx’ but much larger. I did nothing more than to create my own creature, in my own mind. Some of its physical traits are the same, some are different. This is the reason Kate and the paleontologists are uncertain of what it is: They are stuck with an assumed picture in their overly-educated minds.

The truth is often stranger than fiction, but some secrets are only revealed to a chosen few.

But exactly what Blood Feather is, is not important. The bottom line is that it’s a killer. It lives on flesh and blood, and it gets pleasure from the hunt and chase. It is airborne, so there really is no escape, and it has the ability to somewhat hypnotize its prey with its eerily human eyes. It is meant to confuse and terrify, which is precisely what I designed it for. Its beauty is deceptive; it will lure you in and then end your life. To be honest, this was the most fun for me: Writing about presumptuous humans who are scrambling around out of their element, trying to get the best of nature’s perfect killing machine.

    –↓–“A word from our sponsor”–↓– –↑–“Ads made this possible”–↑–

I truly hope readers are as entertained by this story as I was by writing it. I tried to keep it light and simple without compromising fear or blood. I also wanted to tell a story that would keep the reader turning pages by avoiding long, drawn out descriptions or droning, pointless fluff. Blood Feather Awakens By RWK Clark
Blood Feather Awakens By RWK Clark

Blood Feather Awakens by R.W.K. Clark is the story of a wildlife photographer who encounters a murderous unknown bird while in the Amazon jungle. The massive feathered creature murders his guide right in front of him, but he manages to escape with his life. Soon, he is compelled to take his photos of the animal to an ornithologist at the university, and they are heading back to the Amazon to find and capture the deadly bird.

The primary characters in the book include Sam Daniels, a professional wildlife photographer, and Dr. Kate Beck, an ornithologist for the University of Washington. Rico is the first guide killed, while Miguel, Abilio, and Glaucio are the three guides who accompany them when they return. Dr. Harold Kreiger and Roy Hastings are the paleontologists who are racing against the clock to find Blood Feather before Kate and Sam do.

Other big players include Kate’s assistant, Jason Seward, and Martha, her receptionist at the university. Basically, the main characters are just chasing the bird, but all of them are motivated to do so by different things. The majority of this book takes place during the return trip, when the bird is being hunted by them all, and they encounter a series of adventures, misadventures, and horror along the way.

Blood Feather: A Prehistoric Predator Unleashed!

For me, it is a bit difficult to pinpoint if I really had a favorite character from this book. There are those who have negative motives, and it was easy to hate them. There are also those who are simply along to help, like the guides, but they were easier to like than the bad guys. As far as my personal favorites, I would vote for Sam and Kate; they are the ones with the purest motives, after all, and the love that is growing between them makes the entire book flow a little better.

If I could relate to any one character, though, I would choose Miguel. He is the director of Expedition Amazon, and he is the lead guide on their journey. Miguel has a righteous anger about the bird, and a huge concern regarding its desire and ability to kill. He has already lost one man, Rico, and he wants to stop this thing before it is too late. Miguel is a family man whose heart is weighing heavy, and this instills a level of bravery in him that is really pretty unrivalled by his associates.

Blood Feather: When Prehistory Stalks the Present!

The story takes place primarily in the jungle, but in the beginning, it swings back and forth a bit from Sam’s apartment in Seattle too Kate’s office at the university. Of course, there is a bit of travel going on, but the majority of this tale takes place in the Amazon, which gives the entire storyline a strange, spooky feel. Most of us have never visited the jungle, and the thought of being out in the middle of it, with no shelter other than a tent, while a killer bird is flying around, is pretty scary indeed. I felt like RWK Clark did a very good job providing the perfect narrative in regarding to location, which proved to really help the feel of the story.

While there were many good, descriptive parts, and lots of realistic dialogue, my favorite part of this book was the very end. True to Clark’s form, he once again delivers a twist that changes everything, and to put it bluntly, the lack of the idyllic ending was just what it needed. I think he wanted readers to ask themselves: ‘What would happen if we messed around with something that Mother Nature never intended us to even see? What would this thing do to us? Well, he pretty much lays it on the line at the end.

Now is a good time to discuss the ‘bad guys’ in the book, Dr. Harold Kreiger and Dr. Roy Hastings. These two paleontologists are associates of Kate’s at the university, and she goes to them with Sam in an effort to see if they know exactly what species the bird is. Something inside of her tells her to hold back, and she couldn’t be more correct. As soon as Kreiger sees the photos of the bird, he immediately begins to formulate a plan for beating Sam and Kate to the Amazon and capturing the creature first. His name would go down in history, and he would get fame and fortune as a result.

The truth is often stranger than fiction, but some secrets are only revealed to a chosen few.

As far as the bird goes, Clark did a good job prodding me to think about its mindset. Was it fearful, or simply violent? Is it attacking out of fear, or some kind of shark-like rage that was simply its nature? When he introduces the view of the bird’s nest at the very end, I think it really sunk in that Sam, Kate, and everyone else were fighting a losing battle from the start: They had no idea what they were doing, and their lack of respect for the creature and the unknown ultimately lead to the demises the reader witnesses here.

I would have to say this is a really good reading choice for those who enjoy science fiction with a touch of horror. It is not so intense that you will end up sleeping with the lights on, and it won’t take you months to trudge through. ‘Blood Feather Awakens’ is an easy-read that doesn’t weight the reader down or confuse them with too many characters or too much filler. It is also a good, imaginative story, almost alone the lines of Jurassic Park, only worse, in some ways, but we won’t talk about those points here; it may just give away the ending to do so.

In conclusion, I would recommend RWK Clark’s ‘Blood Feather Awakens’ to anyone looking for some good reading entertainment. Once again, he contributes a story that is written just for the joy of writing, and it manages to provide us with the light, creative entertainment he is known for, without bogging readers down in the slightest. This book is fresh, entertaining, and will keep you reading until the very end.
